Bremerton's locker room was not its usual, jovial setting after Tuesday's 51-38 loss at the hands of upstart Goehausen, now a frontrunner for the conference title. The loss dropped the Westies' record to 3-3.
The closest B. West could get was 22-23 with just under 4 minutes left in the first half. Goehausen closed the opening frame with a 9-0 run.
Chris Roth took the brunt of the blame for the loss. "I'm not showing up. I mean, I'm here, but I'm not here. Check the stats. The last two weeks, I have been off. Piss-poor." The performance overshadowed Roth's big news, as he announced pre-game that his wife and season-ticket holder, Jessica, is expecting their first child. "First recruit for Bremerton class of 2025," Roth said.
The game was not without its share of drama. Goehausen made a point to key their defense on the Hy-Vee player of the week, Joe Burke, disallowing any freelance offensive moves he may have had in-store. Likewise, they attempted to draw several fouls on "The Grocer." "You've got to be kidding me" replaced the usual "Nice hit, Hammer" chatter out of the always-animated Burke. "I thought this was Men's C League," he was overheard after the game, questioning the recreational value of Bremerton's opponent. "Nobody told me prison rules were in affect tonight."
Back in the lineup after a one-game absence was F David Plous who, although he scored double-figures in rebounding, never got his offensive game going. "I was a little rusty, yeah," Plous said. "But that's no excuse. I just didn't finish on some shots I usually make." Coach Sargent echoed Plous's statement. "Thing is....the last two games, I've just been waiting for someone to step up, to make some things happen. Mainly on the defensive side. We got some turnovers late; it was too late, really. We've got to have better spacing, more awareness. If Roth is going to have an off night - and hey, the guy can't be expected to carry us every game - we need someone who can help fill that gap for a spell."
Lately, that player has been Sargent. He dropped in 18 last night to lead all scorers, bringing his team-leading scoring average to 12.5 per game. "I try to answer the challenge put forth by the defense. They had their weakest defender on me; I should've had 25 or 30, that's how many opportunities I felt I missed. And for every 3 we hit, Goehausen had an answer. I think our biggest run was 6- or 7-0. Nothing that could really put a scare into them in the second half, anyway."
The coach sang the praises of Bremerton's unsung stars, Alex Carr and Brad Hill. "Carr got the start, and he really played aggressive, which was the point," Sargent noted. "And B. Hill paced us in rebounding. Along with Reddell, Burke and Plous, those guys get hammered on every night. And, well....there's not a lot of whistles out there." In fact, West was flagged for a season-high 19 personal fouls last night. "It's like they forget that there are two ends of the court," a frustrated Nick Reddell said after the game. "But we'll be here next week, ready to make a run at them."
Bremerton West plays the Wildcats (0-6) next Tuesday, February 17th, 6:30PM at The Matt.
