"A win is a win," said Bremerton F Brad Hill in the post-game press conference. "It doesn't matter what it looked like."
Well put. On Tuesday, a shorthanded squad of Westies handed the winless Wildcats their 7th straight loss of the season. The game, however, was not without its usual B. West dramatizations.
G Matt Sargent found himself in foul trouble, with three whistles before 12 minutes had passed in the game. Two of the calls were player-control fouls. "They're in love with that call, that's all," Sargent quipped post-game. "Like B. Hill said, 'a win is a win.' I don't care how ugly it was, we're 4-3. I'm happy."
What made Sargent, perhaps, a little unhappy, was the defensive scheme dreamed up by the Wildcats. For most of the game, they employed a triangle-and-two on he and fellow G Chris Roth, trying to minimize their scoring opportunities. Sargent and Roth, nonetheless, combined for half of the Westies' offensive output. "When they weren't going to the triangle-and-two, they were up in everyone's shorts," Roth said. "We still didn't shoot as well as I think we can. But we got the ball inside, Plous had a monster game. And Hilly, he hit a couple bombs. Decelers."
Not to be overlooked, F Nick Reddell once again paced the team in rebounding. He and Plous had 10 each. It was also Reddell's good fortune to get some good looks at the basket, something that has been few and far between for the physical player. "It was still a battle inside," he said while at the post-game party at the Other Place, "but they didn't just bang the (stuff) out of me this week. We were the aggressors. I think Sargent got us fired up at the half."
The impromptu halftime pep-talk delivered by Sargent was pointedly aimed at the Wildcats' abilities. "I told the guys, I'm not changing the way I play, I'm going to play hard. I told them we'd probably fare better with just four guys on the floor, spreading out passing lanes and such, anyway," the coach explained while taking out three pepperoni slices and half a cannister of parmesan cheese. "The Wildcats were what we thought they were," he continued. "They are what we thought they were!" his voice raised slightly, illiciting laughter from his teammates.
Bremerton West ends the first half of the 2009 season next Tuesday at The Matt, 7:30PM against the Money Shots. Check back later this week for game previews and other updates.
