19 Years Later, Coach Williams' Recruiting Prowess Proven

The letter, dated August 13, 1990, sits in head coach Matt Sargent's basketball office.  Hand-signed by Roy Williams himself, the letter states, in Sargent's eyes, that "KU had their eyes on me.  Oh yeah.  My sixth-grade YMCA teammates were put on notice.  It was my team," Sargent says with a chuckle.  "I had a good camp that year.  Everyone got their picture taken with Coach.  I am his height - have been since that age.  What a shame."

Sargent goes on to tell the best part of camp that year.  "Because of my height, they had me playing in the post.  No, really....I was a power forward that year.  Of course, I was a point guard, really.  So I get a steal in one of the games, and I'm on a fast break....and this guy is at half-court, like he's going to steal it back from the 'big man,' and I do a behind-the-back dribble and cruise for the easy layup.  The coaches were shocked."

Hence, the letter identifying Sargent as "one of the five best players in your gym."  "Looks like I peaked early," Sargent noted.

That is, until most recently.  Perhaps Coach Williams wasn't so wrong after all.  This season, Sargent has been averaging 12.5 ppg, and 18 ppg over the last three conference games.  "We've got a different make up this year, we're smaller, faster....we run more.  As the head coach, I definitely would say I take some of our offensive sets out of Williams' playbook.  I like pushing the ball as far down court as possible.  I think we're playing much better this year than recent seasons."

Bremerton West plays the Wildcats (0-6) at 6:30PM Tuesday night at The Matt.
