It didn't take long for the backcourt tandem of All-Leaguer Chris Roth and upstart Matt Sargent to get noticed around the league.
"Yeah, we know about those guys," one player from Team Taylor, Bremerton's opponent next Tuesday, said during Friday morning's media day event. "Sargent's not going to fly under our radar."
Tim Taylor, coach, player, founder, and host ofthe popular television program "Tool Time" with assistant Al Boreland, said of his scouting report on Sargent, "Aarrgh?!"
Other league officials and media blitzens had a different take: "These guys are a special one-two combo. Reminds me of Salim Stoudamire and Khalid Reeves from the University of Arizona. Can these guys lead West to a title? Anything's possible. I'd like to see them be able to play a complete game, rather than just a terrific half of basketball. But, like I said, anything's possible."
Stoudamire and Reeves? When told of the comparison, Sargent asked, "Well, which one am I? Salim was shorter, but he's left-handed like Rothchild. And I'm better looking, similar to Khalid. Yeah, that sounds good."
Sargent pointed to numerous factors that have lead to his re-emergence as a legitimate scoring threat for Bremerton West. "For one thing, I've dropped some weight over the offseason, down to a 33-inch waistline. Thinnest I've been since the high school days. Secondly, I've been going to the gym a half-hour, hour in advance of my Sunday basketball games at St. Ann's. The extra shooting practice has really paid off. Combined with our offensive scheme, with everybody really buying into everything, it's amazing what a little teamwork can accomplish. If you go back and look at our comeback wins, which is all three, you'd see that we played together the entire game. It may not have been pretty, but it was effective."
For his part, Roth said that having the hot hand in the game is something that his Bremerton teammates have done a good job spotting. "When El Sargarino was on fire, we got him the ball. When I was hot, they got me the ball. When Plouser was on a tear, we got him the ball. Same goes, all the way down the line. No egos on this team. We take pride in getting the ball to the open man."
Roth added, "We can't compare Sarge to El-Amin anymore, because he stopped eating every bag of chips in sight." Good news for Sargent. Bad news for West's upcoming opponents.
Bremerton West (3-1) takes on Taylor (2-2) Tuesday evening at 9:30PM at The Matt.
