Player Spotlight: 2B Matt Sargent

To the head of the class: Punishers 2B Matt Sargent (pictured) has been named to the All-League team along with SP Clint (last name unavailable at press time). It marks first-time honors for both players.

For Sargent, making All-League after appearing in the league minimum of games only means raising the bar for the playoffs. "Teammates, opponents, fans....everyone, really, now has heightened expectations for my performance. It's a great feeling, don't get me wrong. But this is a team game. No individual honor means a thing to me unless we bring home a championship."

When asked about his team's perceived lack of depth in pitching, Sargent added, "I think we have an All-League pitcher on our staff."

Sargent's line for the season was as follows: .450 BA, 5 RBI, 4 R, and 2 SB in six games of work. In the field, he was a magician, with his only 2 errors coming while filling in at SS for an injured Nick Reddell.

Said a league spokesperson, speaking under the guise of anonymity: "Sargent reminds me of a young Chase Utley. But, then again, you can't really say that, because I believe they are the same age. So....Utley wears #26, Sargent #13....so, maybe he reminds me of half of Chase Utley. Which, you know, is pretty good for this league."

Sargent is considered by many to be the frontrunner for Newcomer of the Year honors. The Shawnee Punishers take on the KCK Giants in game 1 of their series at 9PM on Friday at Mid America, Royals field.
