Nick Reddell's Shawnee Punishers have just about had it. Since winning a week and a half ago, 16-6, the Big Puns have gone 0-3, twice without superstar utility player Matt Sargent.
"It hurts our offense when he's not there," Reddell said via teleconference Wednesday morning. "However, him being there has sometime hurt our defense." Reddell was, of course, referencing Sargent's two throwing errors in Sunday's 6-2 loss to the Raymore-Peculiar FIRE. His only recourse was that Sargent supplied the lone hit for the Punishers in the game, an RBI single in the 4th inning. "He's definitely the only one hitting right now," Nick the Quick added.
Sargent's average now sits at an even .400. In a news release late Tuesday afternoon, the Shawnee Punishers announced that they had come to terms with Sargent to fill a temporary roster spot for the remainder of the season. He had the following to say:
"I am very excited. It's been a while for me out on the left side of the infield, but the more throws I make, the more improvement I will see. Fielding, knocking the ball down, I've got it....I just need to get over the hump on my throws. I really sucked last game."
League Commissioner Tom Prendergast said of the contract, "I will review this swiftly, as it appears the Punishers are in need of some offensive pop. I see no problems with the incentive-laden contract initially, but will have to get it approved officially in order to include it in next week's league newsletter."
