In what can only be referred to as the biggest story of March, Bremerton West GM Matt Sargent announced this morning that the contract of center and All-Conference performer Mark DeBaun has been sold to the Tomahawk Sports Dome Spring I League. In a prepared statement, Sargent said:
"BEI and Bremerton West Basketball Club announce today that the contract for Mark DeBaun has been sold to the Tomahawk Sports Spring I League, effective the end of the week. On behalf of the fans, his teammates, and the front office, I would like to thank Mr. DeBaun for his service and performance as an All-Conference representative of our basketball club. There comes a time in every team, coach, and player's career when he has to ask himself whether or not the path he's on is the right one for the group as a whole. It has been decided on behalf of Bremerton West that it would be in the best interests of both parties, Mr. DeBaun and BEI, if we amicably parted ways. Although he will not fulfill his current service contract with BEI, we would welcome Mr. DeBaun back to the squad at a later date if a contract is able to be negotiated."
What a shocker! Quick investigation by B. Press reveals several key points factoring into this deal: (1) In a contract year, BEI would have to choose to sign DeBaun or Rian Tilgner to a long-term deal, (2) DeBaun's post-style of play may be an underlying factor in the search for Bremerton's next head coach, and (3) it is rumored that after the Spring I League is completed, the Tomahawk Dome will close its doors for good, thereby creating the need for a marquee player to add to their rosters of has-beens and create buzz for the "swan song" on Midland Drive. Rest assured, we at B. Press will be investigating this story and bringing you fan, player, and league reaction as soon as our fingers can type!
