When the refs didn't show, "Showtime" was officially introduced as Bremerton West's new style of play. Absent from the team were mainstays Rian Tilgner (injury), Chris Roth (DNP-Coach's Decision), and Mark "Moose" DeBaun (although listed as ACTIVE, DeBaun didn't show, perhaps out of retaliation for the selling of his contract). The Westies went to war with only 5, but were able to stave off Eduardo Najera's cousin's squad for most of the interleage scrimmage.
In the end, the unofficial scoring had the Westies down, 73-59, although Coach Sargent protested 5 of Najera's points. In addition, Sargent called "next basket wins" so everyone could hear before Zul's final jump shot was released and found the bottom of the twine.
"That Lasik sArgery must not have taken quite yet," Sargent said afterwards. "I'm just glad Zul hit a few late shots after missing so many. Don't get me wrong - they all looked good. But, really, his performance isn't exactly a walking commercial for the Sabates Eyes Centers now, is it?"
A great time was had by all participants. Joe Burke posted a career high for points, Chad Cillissen hit "the impossible bank shot," David Plous returned from academic probation to pace the team in scoring, and both Zul and Sargent posted their first double-doubles of the season. For Sargent, his 12 assists and 14 points were validation that West's new, uptempo style of play best suits their personnel. Team chaplain and Director of Player Development Zul agreed. "Our strength is not pounding the ball inside anymore. We get out and run. Dirty Najera's squad was tired. We would've had them, had some refs showed their ugly mugs. Oh well - the postgame bash was the best all season."
There was some talk of a rescheduled match; however, league officials could not be reached for immediate comment.
