Bremerton West entered the "Post Rex" era today, as now former head coach Rex Walters' contract was purchased by the NBDL last night. Walters leaves the team after compiling 1-3 record, although he never officially cased the sidelines for any of the Westies' games. No word yet on who will succeed as head coach, although many players and fans have their own ideas.
"We will conduct a thorough coaching search," remarked GM and coaching vacancy committee head Matt Sargent. "Last thing we need is another Sargent coaching the team," he added, jokingly making reference to his own coaching stint with the team. Sargent led the squad for a little more than 2 seasons, compiling an 8-12 record. The one caveat: a league championship in his first season that is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaching performances in rec league history (at least around Johnson County). "When you look at the championship squad, they really haven't changed too much form then. The key players are still around," said ESPN's Stephen A. Smith. "What I don't get-how could they die-gress so emphatically in the last few years?! You know what I think? Too much party time. Not enough focus on the fun-da-mentals. Quite frankly, they couldn't beat my sister's cousin's kindergarten homeroom team at Aggravation."
So, Bob Knight came and went without any major announcement. Contract dispute? Salad bar incident? B. Press will be investigating this story closely as the deadline to make a hire approaches....
In other news, we've finally gotten to the bottom of the Chris "Zul" Cool saga. He was suspended for 2 games, retroactive January 25th, for his role in the hair product-smuggling ring as outlined in The Paul Mitchell Report. It is our understanding that Walters was to re-instate Zul for next Tuesday's game, but alas, with a possible new coach and all, it is hard to estimate when our 3rd leading scorer will return. Here's to hoping that the league's front office can't find more ways to keep Zul out of action!
In (still) other news, small forward David Plous has been placed under academic probation, and will miss the next two games after violating team class attendance policy. No official word yet, but sources close to the situation say Dave has been under investigation since the first week of the season for academic misconduct, and that he will not be back in uniform until the final two regular-season games. It looks like once again GM Matt Sargent will have to work his magic on the free agent market. A list of available players passing physical examination was not readily available, but once it has been released to us, we will have a post up.
Go West!
