The tired look on the faces of your Westies' last night was a sign of wear and tear from the long season of losing - and Rian Tilgner, perennial All-Conference, was among the last to leave. "We had them," Tilgner said. No postgame press conference, no appearance on the weekly Bremerton Bash, just the single quote. So true.
In last night's regional matchup, Bremerton West rode a strong first half performance by Tilgner, Mark DeBaun, and an upstart Zul to a commanding 8-point lead. That lead, however, would disappear early in the second half behind the Knicks' Josh Rhodes look-alike, who put up a career-high 31 points. At one point in the second half, he made 4 threes in consecutive trips down the court. "He kept inching back, every time down. He's taller, so he can get off his shot unobstructed. The 3-2 has been really working for us, but there's nothing we can do about a hot shooter like that. He thought he was Paul O'Linney for a few minutes or something," DeBaun commented at the postgame.
Although there were several questionable (non) calls during play, Coach Sargent downplayed that the referees may have had an impact on the game's outcome. "Here it is, plain and simple. Bremerton is an unseeded, virtual unknown in the Matt Ross League. The Knicks are playing for another league title. They practice 3 times a week, and play 3 other nights. They run DIAMOND. They are intense to a fault. We play for recreation, to have fun and hopefully win more than we lose. But we don't, we WON'T practice, call plays, or even run anything that looks remotely like the Knicks' flex offense. We won't stoop to the level of those &%#@, period. We're better than that."
