"I was saying it earlier this week, I'll say it now, and you'll probably hear it again from me," an elated coach Sargent said after last night's game, "our team is much better than our record." Indeed, Bremerton West put on a clinic last night in the first game of Sub-State, defeating HNTB (a.k.a. Deucers) 65-54.
West used a stifling 3-2 zone to exploit the outside shooting deficiencies of HNTB, led by Steve "Fidel" Casto, who couldn't quite get their rhythm the entire night. "It was the refs," Casto was overheard saying. "That, and we were missing, like, at least three deucers tonight," he added.
When coach heard this, he quipped, "if Fidel says they were missing three or more players, then their roster is illegal. Twelve players, max. I'm pretty sure they had 10 guys tonight - a full squad in my book. Listen, the better team won here tonight....no doubt in my mind. I know we've come into postseason play unseeded. But I've been here before. And I've won it all before."
The "winning it all before" as a unseeded playoff team shout aside (Sargent led a winless Ultimate Frisbee team to a postseason title in the spring of 2002), the Westies fired on all cylinders for sure, and even brought out a few new tricks ("Jap plays," anyone?). The most notable of these being Joe "The Grocer" Burke's "Scream Block." "Basically, I said to myself, I'm either going to hammer the tar out of this guy, or just scream when he shoots," Burke explained. "I screamed, he missed....alas, the 'Scream Block' is born."
Everyone who played scored for Bremerton, going with a short squad of 6 players for the first time this season. "You could tell everyone was in the flow of the game tonight, focused....high energy tonight, no question," Sargent was overheard telling reporters at his post-game show, now being held at Maloney's Bar and Grill. "This venue's service is definitely an improvement, and the beer seems to be colder," team chaplain Zul noted.
Next up for Bremerton is next week's regional match-up versus the Knicks, 8:30 PM at the Matt. See you there!
